BRbeh
Fats Waller, “I’m Crazy ‘Bout My Baby” | 1931
Safe to say, no one in music has pronounced “baby” quite like Fats Waller in his rollicking 1931 version of the standard, “I’m Crazy ‘Bout My Baby,” which he wrote with orchestra leader Alex Hill. Waller – who made a name for himself through his clownish persona that subverted racist and bigoted thinking – treats love and “baby” like a boardwalk game on a sunny day. He’s leaning close to her as he walks, singing and laughing, making her giggle with carefree delight.
I'm the world's most happy creature
Tell me what can worry be?
I'm crazy 'bout my BRbeh
BRbeh is crazy 'bout me
… Mr. Cupid was our teacher
That's the reason we agree
I'm crazy 'bout my BRbeh
BRbeh is crazy 'bout me.
