THE BEACH BOYS, "Don’t Worry Baby" |  Shut Down Volume 2, 1964

As the story goes, Brian Wilson was inspired to write "Don't Worry Baby" after he heard the Ronettes' Phil Spector masterpiece "Be My Baby" on the radio. Some say he effectively ripped off the tune and concept. The similarities are conspicuous, but it’s hard to blame a guy for creating something that sounds like something else but then also sounds so good. The chukka-chukka-chukka-chukka tempo and melody are infectious from the get-go. Then there’s Wilson's trademark falsetto-chorus pine, an instrument unto itself. His "baby," each “baby,” lingers so sweetly over the background of Beach Boys harmonies and that lazy-bopping sunset beat, it hints at love, adoration, pending heartbreak, even death.
